Welcome to my pet page! ANIMAL HOUSE is dedicated to speaking out for the thousands of dogs and cats, kittens and puppies, and other furry and feathered friends that need our helping hands. Along with finding GOOD "forever" homes for them, we also hope to provide news and information that will help end the suffering of thousands more animals who have been neglected, abused or abandoned. ANIMAL HOUSE also offers you resources to help keep your pet companion healthy and happy, and to help those animals who as of yet, have no family to call their own.
In the past 12 years, close to one million adoptable animals were killed in Houston area shelters. The ASPCA estimates as many as 10 million pets are put down each year in American public and private shelters for a wide variety of reasons, but most of those animals, it says, are adoptable.
It doesn't have to be that way. Together, we can provide our 'best friends' a strong, powerful voice to help make Houston, Harris and surrounding counties more humane. Together, like other cities across Texas, we can work toward becoming a no-kill community and finding homes for each and every adoptable dog and cat. The methods are simple: support those agencies whose mission is to prevent animal suffering, be a responsible pet owner (spay and neuter at the top of the list!), strengthen laws against abusers, roadside vendors and backyard breeders and then enforce those laws. It's not just about public safety and public health. It's about doing the right thing for the animals abandoned in an empty house, dumped by the side of the road or chained to a car bumper. They've done nothing wrong. We have. It's time for us to get it right.

DUKE is an 11 year old Schnauzer who is the love of his family, and goes everywhere with them. Duke has carried them through very hard times.  His "parents" raised him since he was a puppy and are crushed.
Duke's "mom" went into Deerbrook Mall around 8 PM on June 26th and left Duke in the car with his "dad" Lawrence.  Due to illness, Lawrence had to go to the restroom and reluctantly went to the mall restroom, leaving Duke in the locked car with a window cracked.
Although Lawrence was only gone for a few minutes, Duke was stolen during that time.

REWARD -- no questions asked!!  Duke just needs to come home!

Please contact Gay Fisher at 713-614-9964 or Lawrence at 713-692-0989 with any information.

We are looking for our lost dog named "Honey."  She is over 11 years old and has been in the family that entire time, so we miss her terribly!  She got out of the yard in the La Porte area (southeast of Houston). She was wearing a blue and white collar with hibiscus flowers on it.
If you have seen our Honey, please call Jason or Cherie at 281-630-1885 or 281-471-2783.  Thanks very much!

SYDNEY is lost in Memorial. Her mom, Meredith, just moved to the area, and has been looking all over for her. Sydney has been sighted, but Meredith is always just behind her. Sydney is wearing a green collar with a tag and is micro-chipped. She was spotted near Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, and the closest major intersection is Memorial and Fondren.  For a map to the area where Sydney was seen,

Mustang Murder?
Wednesday 07-02-2008 10:40am CT

RENO, Nev. — Federal officials are considering euthanizing wild horses to deal with the growing population on the range and in holding facilities, authorities said Monday.

Wild horses have overpopulated public lands and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management can't afford to care for the number of mustangs that have been rounded up, said Henri Bisson, the agency's deputy director. Also, fewer people are adopting the horses, he said.

Monday's announcement marks the first time the agency publicly has discussed the possibility of putting surplus animals to death.

The agency is also considering whether to stop roundups of wild horses to save money, a move that would be criticized by and from sheep and cattle ranchers who see the mustangs as competition for feed on the open range.

"Our goal is supposed to be about healthy horses on healthy ranges. But we are at the point we need to have a conversation with people about pragmatically what can we do given the financial constraints of our program to meet the goals we have," Bisson said.

There are an estimated 33,000 wild horses on the range in 10 Western states, Bisson told the organization's National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board.

About half of those are in Nevada.

The agency has set a target "appropriate management level" of horses at 27,000.

About another 30,000 horses are in holding facilities, where most are made available for adoption. But those deemed too old or otherwise unadoptable are sent to long-term holding facilities to live out their lives — some for 15 to 20 years.

The board will consider the alternatives at its next meeting in September.

Last year about $22 million of the entire horse program's $39 million budget was spent on holding horses in agency pens. Next year the costs are projected to grow to $26 million with an overall budget that is being trimmed to $37 million, Bisson said.

"We have a responsibility to balance the budget, so we are going to have to make some tough choices," Bisson said.

Bonnie Matton, president of the Wild Horse Preservation League, said she wasn't surprised by the agency's predicament.

"They really do have a can of worms," she said.
