About John:
John joined the KTRH staff in 2005, after a five-year run doing morning news at the Clear Channel affiliate in Harrisburg, Pa.  He's been in radio since the mid 90's ... first as a rock jock in Myrtle Beach, S.C., then as a weekender at a contemporary Christian station in Atlanta, before finally getting into news.

Before finding his true calling in the radio business, John was also an accountant, auditor, bar manager, bartender, beach bum, housekeeper, real estate agent, ski bum, travel agent, vinyl siding salesman, and a waiter.

John has a generally positive outlook to go with his off-beat sense of humor.  The only thing he hates is talking about himself in the third person.

ENTRY #61: PIG OUT!
Thursday 07-03-2008 10:02am CT

Independence Day means barbecue, beer, and fun. The trick is knowing when to say "when". Weight loss coach Janice Taylor says it's okay to break with the diet every once in awhile:

"I'd say pig out with consciousness. In all seriousness, if you've been thinking about it all week long and telling yourself you're not going to pig out, the chances of pigging out are pretty good. You've really set your mind to do it, and we all have... That's really the key; one meal, one day, does not a fat person make, does not an unhealthy person make. Just move on, forgive yourself; do not beat yourself up."

The author of "All is Forgiven, Move On," says it's okay to overindulge once in awhile; just don't make it a regular habit.

ENTRY #60: FIT OR FAT?
Thursday 07-03-2008 9:57am CT
The TEA weighs in on the heath of Texas school children.

According to that new report, fitness levels among students are slipping every year through the 12th grade.  Commissioners say the decline corresponds to the decreased physical fitness requirements in high school.

ENTRY #59: WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR $500?
Thursday 06-26-2008 11:06am CT

A new survey suggests that employers are offering incentives to encourage workers to get healthy. The National Association of Manufacturers says more companies are offering gift cards of up to 500-dollars as incentives for their employees to lose weight or quit smoking:

"Employees are really responding very positively to these incentives. It seems to be that nudge that they need to get them motivated. And once they get involved in these programs, they have a big support network; they've got nurses, they've got coaches, they've got other individuals that they're actually working on weight loss and smoking with, so it seems to be working."

Study sponsor Sue Lewis says employers are also motivated by self interest: "The number one cost for employers right now is health care costs... It's a true business strategy to try to get employees engaged in these programs. But it also is an effort for them to show they really do care about the health of these individuals."

Lewis says 83-percent of those who have incentive programs are seeing a positive return on their investment.
